Out of Africa is made from the artist’s favorite worn out coat lining - circa 1940 wool, silk and denim. The size of this hand sewn flag is determined by the limited amount of fabric in the coat lining. The title is derived from Aristotle who said “Ex Africa semper aliquid novi” which translates to “out of Africa always something new.“ Africa, since ancient times, was reckoned as very important and everyone acknowledges that likely civilization stemmed from Africa. The recent “OOA” (Out Of Africa) theory holds that all present day human’s descend mainly from a single expansion of anatomically modern humans, “homosapians”, from Africa about 70,000-50,000 years ago. It is the most wildly accepted model of early migration of the human species. This small flag represents America’s brief and complex relationship to this colossal global origin story.
