One Saturday in February 2021, I discovered a box of copper leaves depicting various rings at the Vienna Naschmarkt. I quickly decided to buy all of them and only later looked more closely at my flea market find in the studio. On each platelet you can see the detailed impression of a ring from as many perspectives as possible. Almost every platelet is inscribed and dated between 1926 and 1933. Most likely, these are electroplated impressions of work by a Viennese jeweler who archived them in this manner.
Silver casts of single galvanic platelets form the individually crafted ring heads of the new rings.
The narrative of the old becomes the decorative element of the new.

Petra Zimmermann’s jewelry objects are forthright, sensuous, and opulent. Her early
works already reveal an artistic strategy she has continued to pursue ever since: an
allusive confrontation of provided material and individually designed plastic forms.
However, theobjects produced in this way avail of more than just their decorative
function; Zimmermann’s works are far more “thought impulses” bringing up aesthetic
questions of appeal, value and the transitoriness of beauty. They impress as subtle
works of art that cause the conventional barriers between design, the applied arts and
fine arts to falter….
Petra Zimmermann, born in Graz in 1975, studied sculpture at the Vienna University
of Applied Arts. Petra Zimmermann lives and works in Vienna.
